Abstract
This chapter aims to inspire teacher educators to seek local partnerships with non-formal educators, specifically in the context of science education for rural teacher preparation. With an emphasis on place-based education, the authors argue that non-formal educators, programs, and organizations have unique expertise and resources for experiential learning that can complement the preparation of pre-service teachers. Drawing on their institution's rich history in non-formal education and foundational research, the authors provide a vision for teacher educators to collaborate with their non-formal peers. These synergistic collaborations can aid teacher preparation by addressing systemic challenges in rural education and science education more broadly.
