Virtual Management During COVID-19: The Need for Context and Competence Development for Virtual Managers Because of the Pandemic
Svein Bergum (Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences, Norway)
DOI: 10.4018/978-1-7998-9840-5.ch009
Abstract
Before the pandemic, research on management at a distance, here called virtual management, was characterized by a “best practice approach” where there was little differentiation dependent on context. COVID-19 has meant that employees with insufficient competence and in unsuitable jobs must work remotely. A more context- or situation-oriented perspective on virtual management is therefore needed. The authors identify new characteristics of virtual management during the pandemic and identify relevant context factors. Another point marginally discussed in previous research is what kind of competence-developments leaders need post COVID-19. The research questions are answered through a qualitative study with semi-structured interviews of experts, such as consultants in new ways of working, together with interviews of experienced practitioners.

Human Behavior in Telework: A Modality of Work Centered on the Human Being That Promotes Opportunities and Social Integration
In Brazil, telework refers to a work modality in which employees carry out their activities remotely, outside the physical premises of the company. In this arrangement, the employee performs their tasks in a location of their choice, such as their residence, using technological resources to communicate and execute their duties. Telework in Brazil is regulated by Law No. 13,467/2017, known as the Labor Reform. This legislation introduced amendments to the Consolidation of Labor Laws (CLT) to encompass telework, establishing specific guidelines for this form of work. According to the law, for telework to be valid, there must be a formal agreement between the employer and the employee, usually through an individual employment contract or an addendum to an existing contract.
