Alternative Medicine Versus Conventional Medicine: What Really Works?

By IGI Global on Feb 1, 2017
Alternative Medicine Versus Conventional Medicine: What Really Works? Alternative medicine often carries a stigma of witch doctors and potions, but in recent years, patients continue to seek different methods before downing the pills the doctor ordered. According to a 2004 NBC News article on a government survey of 31,000 people, more than a third of American adults used alternative treatments of some kind. If prayer is included, about 62 percent of U.S. adults used some form of alternative medicine.

The IGI Global study "Caught in the Middle: The Divide Between Conventional and Alternative Medicine" begins with a patient perspective from the first author. Faced with cascading health problems, this author describes her gradual embrace of alternative treatments. While these improved her health, they also set her apart and prompted antagonism from those in conventional medicine. She found she was not alone in benefiting from a more open view of healing, and not alone in being buffeted by the opposing medical views. Two invited commentaries from medical professionals follow, as well as the first author’s response.

Written by authors Joan W. Young (Independent Researcher, USA), Prakash Thapaliya (Mayo Clinic, USA) and Santosh Sapkota (Ohio University, USA), this research is featured in the International Journal of User-Driven Healthcare, a refereed, applied research journal designed to provide comprehensive coverage and understanding of clinical problem solving in healthcare. The term "user" includes health professionals as well as patients and anyone who uses the web with a user name. These "users" generate an information flow that "drives" the system's workflow (hence the choice of the term "driven"). "User-driven healthcare" aims at improved healthcare through clinical problem solving utilizing concerted experiential learning in conversations between multiple users and stakeholders, primarily patients, health professionals, and other actors in a care giving collaborative network across a Web interface. The journal serves as a valuable academic platform for all these stakeholders to document and share their learning.
