It’s No Competition: Everyone Wins with Safe Sex Games

By Elizabeth Leber on May 19, 2017
Are Majority of Voters Emotionally Driven During Election Season? “We’re not very good at talking about sex,” says a school nurse, Viv Crouch, in a BBC News article. Her quote resonates with many teachers and parents who wonder just how effective the “birds and the bees” talk is, especially amongst generations that seem glued to their computers and phones. The concern has led some to consider an alternative: teaching sex education through video games. Considering this topic is also taboo in many societies, especially Chinese societies, it is crucial to provide educational resources for adolescents to be well-informed on a topic that can have such an immense impact on their lives.

Drs. Alvin C.M. Kwan, Samuel K.W. Chu, Athena W.L. Hong, Frankie Tam, Grace M.Y. Lee and Robin Mellecker lead the exploration of sex education through fun video games in the article titled “Making Smart Choices: A Serious Game for Sex Education for Young Adolescents,” where authentic situations regarding love and sex are mimicked in a virtual reality. Social learning through fictional characters serves as a way for players to make decisions and receive expected outcomes based on their decisions in an environment where they feel comfortable.
