Emotions in Leadership Emotions have no place in organizations and the classroom right? Wrong! Both leadership and education are inherently emotional, and ignoring their emotional aspects is detrimental to leaders, followers, students, and educators alike. In fact, emotions play such an important role in organizations that one wrongly expressed emotion from a leader can damage the organizational climate, creating a vortex of negativity from which it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to recover. In classrooms, one rude comment from an educator can damage the quality of the educator/student relationship, which will negatively affect student learning, and may even cause the student to drop the course, leave the institution, and not matriculate.

Promoting Trait Emotional Intelligence in Leadership and Education is a unique text that bridges the gap between scholarship and practice by providing a list of recommendations that will enable leaders and educators to improve their own effectiveness by utilizing each of the 15 facets of trait emotional intelligence (trait EI). Some of these suggestions for leaders include remaining calm in crises, adapting to meet the needs of the internal and external environment, the importance of establishing and maintaining high quality leader/follower relationships, the need for effective communication skills, and the skills needed to give bad news to one’s followers. For educators, these suggestions include adapting your teaching style according to the needs of your students, the importance of creating and sustaining high quality educator/student relationships, demonstrating to your students that you care about them, and the need to create a positive classroom environment that is conducive to student learning where students are valued and respected.

The impact of this book is revolutionary, because oftentimes, in both leadership and education, many individuals believe that emotions have no place, but not anymore! It is time to harness the power of emotion and with it, meet organizational goals and create a positive learning experience for students. The journey will be difficult, but the rewards are well worth it. Will you keep the status quo, or innovate and embrace your inherent emotionality? All that is left is for you to decide.
