In a world where some retail clothing companies send their products to stores on disposable hangers, wrapped in plastic, and then packed in boxes, many businesses have spent the last few decades focusing solely on time-saving methods to save money. In 2011, however, some companies are finding that incorporating green methods into their business practices can save cash now and, ultimately, help the world!

"Recent volatile price swings in plastic packaging, fuel, cotton, food ingredients such as corn, and a host of other raw materials have added urgency to businesses' efforts to shave costs to keep prices competitive and protect margins," according to a recent article in Bloomberg Businessweek. "Sustainability has emerged as a factor in determining which companies win in the marketplace, and smart CEOs are investing in a more rigorous approach to the environment," said Daniel C. Esty, an environmental policy professor at Yale Law School, according to the same article.

Major corporations like Pepsi and Wal-Mart are taking on initiatives that range from harnessing steam released during potato chip production to be cooled and reused as a water source, to switching plastic packaging from oil-based to corn-based, cutting packaging weight and costs. Innovative green technologies can have positive impacts that save money on everything from production to shipping, and that looks good to consumers and environmentalists, and has stockholders seeing even more green ( www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/11_15/b4223025579541.htm).

Do you need new research to help you green your business? IGI Global is happy to recommend two forthcoming titles by one of our most esteemed editors: Zongwei Luo from The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong.
