Dr. Khan Meets with Nobel Laureate Muhammad YunusIn December 2012, IGI Global editor Dr. Badrul Khan, a world-renowned educator, author, speaker, and consultant in the field of e-learning, had the opportunity to meet with Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus. The experience he had changed his life.

Dr. Muhammad Yunus [left in photo, right] was born in Chittagong, Bangladesh, and educated at Dhaka University. He was awarded a Fulbright scholarship and received his Ph.D. in economics from Vanderbilt University in 1969. The following year he became an assistant professor of economics at Middle Tennessee State University. In 1972, he became the founder and managing director of Grameen Bank. Yunus was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 "for his efforts through microcredit to create economic and social development from below." (www.nobelprize.org). Yunus has received global recognition for his efforts to combat poverty and is nicknamed "Banker to the Poor."

During a visit to Dhaka in 2012, IGI Global editor Dr. Badrul Khan [right in photo] had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Yunus. The two connected over theories and ideas regarding education, technology, and poverty. They discussed potential collaboration in projects focusing on using and leveraging ICTs and modern technology with the intention of boosting economic activity in developing nations and beyond. Considering Dr. Yunus' interest in low-cost learning solutions for global community, Dr. Khan proposed to co-author a book entitled “Sustainable Education in the Digital World”. The proposed book will draw from the knowledge base of Yunus' work on Sustainable Social Business Entrepreneurship perspectives, applicable to the eight dimensions of Khan's IGI Global publication, Flexible Learning in an Information Society. This book will contribute to the new vision of learning and development in the digital world.

"I was very impressed and inspired to see his genuine interest in improving education and healthcare using low-cost learning technology. He shared how technology can improve the conditions of citizens in developing countries. I have interviewed many individuals in my life, but sitting down with Professor Yunus and speaking with him is one of the best memories." [...]

"While discussing low-cost learning solutions in the digital world, I noticed something fascinating. Not only did Yunus show enthusiasm for this idea, but he also demonstrated his underlying passion to make the world a better place."
