How Safe is the Food Produced through Synthetic Biology?

By IGI Global on Nov 12, 2015
IGI Global Editor Travels To Myanmar Since the completion of the Human Genome Project, biologists have shifted their efforts from understanding biology to modifying it. Synthetic biology is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary field that includes developing and manufacturing synthetic nucleotide sequences, systems, genomes, and medical devices.

Synthetic biology is getting a lot of media attention, and it is not necessarily good. “A Bad Bet on Synthetic Biology,” posted last month on Project Syndicate, offers criticism on this new wave of technology, addressing food conglomerate Cargill and its new artificial sweetener EverSweet.

“Synthetic biology is high-tech, and it is also potentially high-risk. Even as it attracts billions of dollars in investment, it is the subject of growing international concern. Cargill does not advertise its use of the controversial technology; instead, the company describes EverSweet as the product of 'specially crafted baker’s yeast,' as if it were a recipe brewed for centuries in Bavarian villages.”

EverSweet, the article explains, is an artificial sweetener that Cargill likens to the sugar substitute Stevia, though it is not plant-based. EverSweet is manufactured by a form of genetic engineering that uses modified organisms to manufacture compounds that are not produced naturally.

While there have been many important breakthroughs in biotechnology, recent case law rulings and legislative statutes have created obstacles for inventors to gain patent protection for novel synthetic biology inventions, such as EverSweet. These issues cause hesitation in license agreements and postpone creation of synthetic biology start-up companies. Nevertheless, inventors still can gain patent protection in many branches of synthetic biology.

The IGI Global chapter “Intellectual Property Protection for Synthetic Biology, Including Bioinformatics and Computational Intelligence” examines the issues, controversies, and problems associated with patent protection in synthetic biology. It then gives solutions, recommendations, and future directions for the field. Written by Fernandez & Associates, LLP scholars Matthew K. Knabel, Katherine Doering, and Dennis S. Fernandez, this chapter is featured in the title Big Data Analytics in Bioinformatics and Healthcare.
