Introduction

Soft Computing can be understood as a set of methodologies and techniques that, when working together and not isolated, facilitate new ways to address practical and real scenarios, similar to the way that humans solve difficult to categorize problems in contexts with uncertainty and vagueness. Its application has provided highly effective and efficient solutions to a wide number of complex problems in many fields, mainly related with Intelligent Systems.

This book is framed within the context of the Spanish National Research Project, Applicability of Soft Computing in Advanced Technology Environments: Sustainability (ASCATES). The global objective of ASCATES is to obtain a portfolio of results and conclusions associated to the applications of Soft Computing to technological environments in which its applicability has not been studied or its potential has not been exploited enough, showing the technical superiority of the solutions provided to the problems at consideration in those environments, as well as the potential sustainability of their transfer to productive and commercial sectors.

Among these technological environments we can found Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, where the applications and developments of Soft Computing have amazingly evolved in recent years and are showing a great potential.

Objective of the Book

The aim of this proposal is to show recent and novel applications of Soft Computing in the field of energy, especially Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency. To be precise, this book is aimed at gathering results and conclusions associated with the applications of Soft Computing to different technological environments within these fields and showing the technical superiority of the solutions provided.

The work will provide both researchers and practitioners with a catalogue of the most successful Soft Computing methodologies applied to Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency.

Target Audience

The expected audience includes students, researchers, engineers, and practitioners in Project Engineering and Computer Science in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency. All of them will be provided with a reference catalogue, which may serve as a guide of recent successful applications of Soft Computing methodologies to these fields. Furthermore, in the work they will be able to check the sustainability of the methods and potential results as well as new trends in the development and production of the final products and services.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

Soft Computing Applications in Renewable Energy and Efficiency Energy:

  • Renewable Energy Resources: Solar, Wind, Geothermal, Biomass, Biogas, Biofuels, Hydropower, Hydrogen and Ocean (wave, tidal…)
  • Applications in Renewable Energy
  • Applications in Efficiency Energy
  • Applications and Services of Renewable Energy in Rural Areas, Isolated Areas, Buildings, Industry, Electricity and Transport
  • Policy of Environmental Impact and Sustainability: Economic aspects, Environmental impact
  • Others: Smart Cities, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Measurement and Verification of Energy Savings
  • Submission Procedure

    Potential contributors are invited to submit by September 30, 2013, a short chapter proposal (up to 200 words) clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his/her proposed chapter. The finally accepted chapter proposals will be notified by October 10, 2013. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by December 30, 2013. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.
