Jayakumar Radhakrishnan

Jayakumar Radhakrishnan is currently an Associate Professor/Scientist at the Neuropathology Unit, SFVAFRE, VA Medical Center in Miami, USA, as well as a Scientist at the Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, Fl. He graduated from the Postgraduate Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Madras, Chennai, India in 1998. He discovered the effect of the ammonia-detoxicating action of L-Arginine on experimentally induced convulsions in rats. He then continued his research as Research Associate in Bio-Organic Laboratory and created a Neurochemistry Laboratory at the Central Leather Research Institute, Adayar, Chennai, India. Later, from 2000-2004, he was a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Division of Neuropathology, Department of Pathology, University of Miami School of Medicine, Miami, FL, Research Assistant Professor until2012. His research area mainly focused on the understanding of the physiopathology of Hepatic Encephalopathy, especially the role of ammonia, gliopathy, neuroinflammation and brain edema in different animal models of acute and hepatic liver failures, as well as in chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Dr. Jayakumar was honored with many international and national awards, including the American Association for the study of Liver diseases and American Liver Foundation Award, Stanley J. Glaser Award for outstanding scientists from the Stanley J. Glaser foundation, Florida, Distinguished Basic Science Research award, Miami VA. With over of 100 publications and 50 international communications, Dr.Jayakumaris considered as one of the eminent specialists in hepatic encephalopathy worldwide. His research area has gained particular scientific interest and was funded through over 10 international and national funded projects. He is currently investigating the mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 infection in humans, as well as in experimental models of COVID-19. He recently discovered novel drugs to prevent COVID-19. He is currently an Editor in many journals including Current Issues in Molecular Biology, Frontiers in Neurosciences, BioMed Research International etc., and also acts as an Editorial Board member in more than a dozen international journals.
