Abstract

Melting point apparatus mainly used in pharmaceutical and chemical industries for determining melting point of chemical substances. Some melting point apparatus are based on manual process in which users have to keep continuously focus on capillary tube till melting point achieved. While some melting point apparatus are digitally or automatically operated and there is no need of operator’s attention. In this paper novel algorithm is proposed for melting point detection of any chemical substance. proposed algorithm is based on change detection technique, it computes pixel value differencing at particular coordinate of two consecutive frames generated by real time video. Difference is compared with threshold value, when pixel value difference crosses the threshold the temperature at that instant recorded as melting point of chemical substance, Proposed algorithm determined melting point of Sodium bicarbonate, D-glucose, Sodium Nitrate, Potassium nitrate and magnesium nitrate with maximum accuracy 98.8% for Potassium nitrate.

There are various change detection techniques being used from past few years. These techniques can be categorized as, a. Algebra method (Image Differencing technique, Image rational method, Change Vector Analysis technique), b. Transformation method (Principal Component Analysis technique, Chi-square method), c. Classification method (Unsupervised Change detection technique, Hybrid Change detection technique, Artificial neural networks) and Visual analysis (Visual interpretation). Mostly researchers used these techniques, for determining the moving objects (Zhang et al., 2010), for determining the changes in Land-use or Land-Cover (Radke et al., 2005), and for remote sensing. After gone through various research papers on change detection. It is found that the above techniques can be used to determine the changes in the state of chemical substances.

BaoFeng Zhang et. al. (2010) proposed work has used image differencing technique for moving object detection. For better moving object detection, it used two-frame difference method, three image difference methods, four image difference method and five image difference method are used for moving object detection, for validation its result curve fitting and statistics methods used and the phenomenon of double image also avoided, the experiment shows that, this is practical and effective.

D. Lu et. al. (2004) summarized and reviewed various change detection techniques and broadly discussed about image differencing technique and analyzed principal components and classification technique. these are the most important and common methods for change detection, the proposed work comprehensively explored to all major change detection approaches and finally concluded that different change detection algorithms have their advantage and disadvantage and found that no single algorithm is appropriate and suitable for all cases.
