Abstract

Shopping mall or a super market is a first choice for buying all necessary products and that is why it attracts more number of customers than the retail shop. But the problem is it creates too many hurdles for customer and owner to maintain the order and keep sync with the time at billing counter. The normal billing and shopping system lacks the time saving approach also it doesn't have proper security arrangements to avoid theft and duplication. To overcome this issue, we developed a smart way for shopping using LabVIEW incorporated with internet of things (IOT). Each and every product contains RFID tag. The smart trolley will consist of a RFID reader, transmitter and ZigBee unit. Along with this, the cart is equipped with the child monitor unit. The whole system is controlled by utilizing the controller developed using LabVIEW. The ZigBee module attached in the cart is responsible for sending the bill to the main billing system and IOT feature is also enabled so that shopping-bill of each customer is mailed to their respective mail-id through esp8266 Wi-Fi module.

1. Introduction

Technology has been evolving at a rapid pace since last decade. The advancement in the field of IOT, sensors and artificial intelligence have simplified the human life and transformed this world into a better place to live in. Today everything connected to internet happens at the touch of smart phone or smart-devices. So, it is important to in capsulate the technology in the grocery market and upgrade the shopping cart into smart shopping cart. This is going to totally the change the experience of customers at shopping malls. Shopping mall is a place which is now overtaking the retail stores in cities and rapidly trending amongst the masses.

But there are few drawbacks in the existing mall system which is needed to be trouble shooted. Customers have to stand in a queue for long time to pay the bills at the counter section through barcode scanning system which at many occasions become cumbersome and frustrating for the customers (Mane et al., 2016). The given system explains the implementation of smart shopping cart and billing system using barcode scanner (Prasiddhi & Dhanashri, 2017). The given system incorporates automatic billing system with the help of RFID and ZigBee (Ezhilazhagan et al., 2016). In present shopping system there are many difficulties. This system proposes an automatic product detection and smart billing with the help of Wi-Fi technology. The payment is processed by mobile banking or cash payment and the cart system will verify the product and payment process will be completed (Dahiya & Neha, 2016). This system is designed for home security based on wire less network using Wi-Fi and IOT. It can detect the theft, fire, leakage of gas or smoke and sends an auto-generated email to alert the owner (Joshi et al., 2015). In this given system, it will measure TDS of an RO system using tds meter and data will be sent using esp8266 Wi-Fi module in the form of messages which is programmed and controlled by Arduino Uno microcontroller (Ahmed & Hassan, 2014; Anusha, 2016). In present system, the child protection is based on utilization of RFID in health-care to avoid swapping or losing sight of children. Also, RFID system is used for school children tracking system using GPS. There are certain disadvantages in the existing barcode-shopping system. In existing system line of sight is required while scanning every product and also multiple products cannot be detected in barcode scanning. If the products are dirty and greased then it can’t be read properly. Also, it is not possible to write, modify and update data in barcode scanning system while in RFID system we can modify the details in RFID tags without tampering it.

Now in our proposed system, we have made an effort to overcome the drawbacks of the existing system. We have proposed a new ‘Smart Shopping Trolley using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) and ZigBee incorporated with Virtual instrumentation (LabVIEW). This implementation is used to assist a person while shopping and also to avoid standing in long queues and thus saving time. Through our proposed shopping cart we will no longer be needed to go to billing counter to pay the bills. Everything will be automated in the shopping cart itself. We can in fact set a threshold budget in our smart-cart to avoid exceeding the user budget. Through RFID shopping cart we no longer need to worry about putting the object in line of sight of sensor. Issue of scanning of multiple objects at the same time is also resolved and hence making it time efficient. We have also made an effort to merge the billing and security system into one system by using RFID tags and RFID reader combined. We have incorporated ZigBee communication module to send our billing data to main counter section.

IOT in recent years have successfully been integrating health sector, automobiles sector and IT sector and similarly we have taken an initiative to integrate IOT in retail sector (Gangwal, n.d.; Jethava, 2014; Kambale, 2014; Maini & Sheltar, 2014; Vinutha, 2014). Now a day’s anything we buy online, we get an E-bill which we can view and store permanently in our mobile app or email account. In this way, we can keep track of all our past shopping purchases and products we bought in a very transparent manner unlike paper bills which we mostly misplace it. But till date E-bill has always been a feature in online shopping. We never come across any retail store or a shopping mall where we get an e-bill along with a computerised paper bill. But in our paper, we will send bill to the customers of shopping mall through e-mail using Arduino and esp8266 Wi-Fi module.
