Description & Coverage
Description:

Providing all students, particularly those with learning disabilities, with the skills necessary to succeed in school and, by extension, the real world is vital in today’s educational landscape. Due to this need, innovative language and literacy tools have been developed to support these students in their learning endeavors and ensure they are receiving the best education possible.

Cutting-Edge Language and Literacy Tools for Students on the Autism Spectrum covers the root causes of the language and learning challenges in autism, their consequences for language acquisition and literacy, and a variety of tools and strategies for addressing them, from teaching technologies to assistive technologies. Drawing on what the most current evidence shows about the nature of autism and which therapies and technologies are most successful, the book reviews the efficacy of existing language therapies, literacy strategies, and assistive technologies. Covering topics such as speech deficits, language learning, comprehension, and assistive communication tools, this reference work is ideal for clinicians, behavioral specialists, speech-language pathologists, special educators, researchers, academicians, practitioners, scholars, educators, and students.

Reviews & Statements

The initial inspiration behind my book are the students in the classes I've taught over the last two decades. These students range from future ABA practitioners to future special ed teachers to future reading, writing, and literacy specialists. Over the time I've taught them, we've seen a Golden Age in autism research and interventions. A large number of studies have accumulated on language and literacy challenges in autism; a wide range of tools have emerged for addressing these challenges and providing alternative means of communication (AAC), and a variety of experiments have been conducted to assess the efficacy of these tools. Some of these tools turn out to be pseudoscientific and unsupported by the evidence but are nonetheless proliferating around the country: in particular, various forms of facilitated communication, including the Rapid Prompting Method and Spelling to Communicate My goal in writing this book is to promote the use of evidence-based methods, as well as to synthesize all the research into a reader-friendly narrative that helps students and researchers see the big picture and the broad implications, accompanied by extensive literature reviews and bibliographies so that interested readers can pursue further any specific topics of interest.
