Description & Coverage
Description:

Human Computer Interaction (HCI) attracts innovation and creativity because of its multi-disciplinary nature, in computing and IT research and development. For the last 25 years, it inspired new solutions, specially, for the benefit of the user as a human being, making the user the focal point which technology should serve rather than the other way round.

The Encyclopedia of Human Computer Interaction is the most thorough and definitive source providing coverage of everything related to the field of human computer interaction (HCI). This encyclopedia covers a wide range of HCI related topics such as concepts, design, usability, evaluation, innovations, and applications of HCI in organizations around the globe. Over 120 contributors and advisors from around the world have conferred their expertise to this publication, and with over 830 key terms and definitions as well as more than 2,600 references, this encyclopedia is the single source of authoritative and contemporary research in field of human computer interaction. The Encyclopedia of Human Computer Interaction also includes coverage of real life experiences and cases of HCI and the lessons learned helping readers to learn extensively about this important field of study.

Coverage:

The many academic areas covered in this publication include, but are not limited to:

  • Creativity and innovation possibilities with HCI
  • CSCW
  • Design and interaction
  • HCI principles and concepts
  • Multi-disciplinary nature of HCI
  • New advances and future research directions
  • Usability engineering and usability evaluation
  • User interfaces and technological applications
  • Various applications
Reviews & Statements

...it is a set of articles on a wide range of HCI topics that could be used as a first set of readings for a senior undergraduate or postgraduate course dealing with HCI. For that purpose it will be very useful and a natural choice for all university libraries, and to libraries the electronic book version is an alternative.

– Online Information Review, Volume 30 (5)

The Encyclopedia of Human Computer Interaction is an authoritative, thorough and well researched reference source that manages to present both breadth and depth of coverage of HCI.

– Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship, Spring 2006

This encyclopedia is a general reference for researchers and HCI professionals as well as undergraduate and graduate students in related areas, such as education.

– American Reference Books Annual (ARBA) 2006

This reference compiles encyclopedia-style articles on established and experimental topics in the field, in the areas of human-computer interaction paradigms, the design process, theories, and analysis. Material on applications looks at the relevance of human-computer interaction research in fields such as e-learning, health informatics, multimedia, and ubiquitous computing.
