Description & Coverage
Description:

As art museum educators become more involved in curatorial decisions and creating opportunities for community voices to be represented in the galleries of the museum, museum education is shifting from responding to works of art to developing authentic opportunities for engagement with their communities. Current research focuses on museum education experiences and the wide-reaching benefits of including these experiences into art education courses. As more universities add art museum education to their curricula, there is a need for a text to support the topic and offer examples of real-world museum education experiences.

Engaging Communities Through Civic Engagement in Art Museum Education deepens knowledge on museum and art education and civic engagement and bridges the gap from theory to practice. The chapters focus on various sectors of this research, including diversity and inclusion in museum experiences, engaging communities through new techniques, and museum and university partnerships. As such, it includes coverage on timely topics that include programs and audience engagement with the LGBTQ+, refugee, disability, and senior communities; socially responsive museum pedagogy; and the use of student workers. This book is ideal for museum educators, museum directors, curators, professionals, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students who are interested in updated knowledge and research in art education, curriculum development, and civic engagement.

Reviews & Statements

I highly recommend the publication for art educators as a practical guide for constructing inclusive museum university collaborative opportunities. This book offers many ideas that could be incorporated into art education pre-service practice and theory coursework.

– Prof. Jeanne Nemeth, Indiana University, USA

In this book, editors Prof. Bobick and Prof. DiCindio skillfully curate chapters that explore the roles and responsibilities that art museums can/should play in breaking down systemic power inequalities and creating public spaces for shared narratives. From reflective documentation and aspirational chapters, to theoretical and historical research, to step-by-step examples and considerations for how to engage in this important work, these case studies highlight how individuals and institutions have decentered the museum space to include community members’ needs, voices, and participation. This is a recommended text for anyone interested in art museum education and the responsible development of civically engaged, mutually beneficial community partnerships and programming.

– Prof. Lisa Hochtritt, Maryland Institute College of Art, USA

Marginalized (BIPOC) students are more likely to consider careers in art if they are provided opportunities to experience a variety of art media and art-based careers. Museum-community art programs such as Discover Graphics provide opportunities many public schools cannot.

– Prof. Pamela Lawton, Maryland Institute College of Art, USA
