Description & Coverage
Description:

From a conceptual view, this book explores the key directions of the charitable and educational activities of the Russian Orthodox Church during the period of religious transformations of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was a time when the number of categories of the unfortunate multiplies, the scale of assistance and responsibility of charitable organizations increased, control over the distribution of aid improved, and the role of the church in the social protection of the population increased.

This book contributes to historical science as it illustrates the complete picture of the church’s activities to ensure the educational process in the parish schools of the Central Chernozem region during the period under study. It was revealed that the specifics of the clergy’s activities, impossible without a proper layer of education, referred the clergy to the most competent category of the population. The clergy, in the absence of a developed education system in Russia, began to implement primary public education. This work, through a historical perspective, help to understand and comprehend the spiritual, moral, and cultural heritage of Russia.
