Description & Coverage
Description:

Since the dawn of human speech and interaction, there have been conflicts among individuals, regions, and whole nations. Disagreements, miscommunications, no matter the name they take; conflicts will continue to be present in every field of work or study. New technologies such as social media have extended people’s ability to communicate, and therefore dispute, making additional research and practical solutions for resolving conflict all the more necessary.

Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Contemporary Conflict Resolution presents theoretical perspectives on the causes of diverse conflicts, approaches novel disputes and the technology associated therein, and provides readers with multifaceted solutions to the myriad of potential arguments and disagreements that arise as part of the human condition. This interdisciplinary publication is a critical resource for researchers, legal practitioners, policy makers, government officials, and students and educators in the fields of political science, communication studies, and business.

Coverage:

The many academic areas covered in this publication include, but are not limited to:

  • Agreement Technologies
  • Data Protection
  • E-Government Conflict Resolution
  • Environmental Conflicts
  • Online Argumentation
  • Online Dispute Resolution
  • Organizational Conflict
  • Quality of Judgement
  • Restorative Justice
Reviews & Statements

Contributors mostly from computer science and engineering, but also some other social and natural sciences explore, how these fields can help with conflict resolution by automating some aspects and making complex analysis possible, freeing humans to do the tasks only humans can do. In sections on about conflicts, conflict and its resolution, and applications for conflict resolution, they consider such topics as biometrics and data protection: data derived from an individual, restorative justice, and more.

Editor/Author Biographies

Paulo Novais is an Associate Professor with Habilitation of Computer Science at the Department of Informatics, in the School of Engineering of the University of Minho (Portugal) and a researcher at the ALGORITMI Centre in which he is the coordinator of the research group Intelligent Systems Lab, and the coordinator of the research line in “Ambient intelligence for well-being and Health Applications”. From the same university he received a PhD in Computer Science in 2003 and his Habilitation in Computer Science in 2011. He started his career developing scientific research in the field of Intelligent Systems/Artificial Intelligence (AI), namely in Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, Machine Learning and Multi-Agent Systems. His interest, in the last years, was absorbed by the different, yet closely related, concepts of Ambient Intelligence, Ambient Assisted Living, Intelligent Environments, AI and Law, Conflict Resolution and the incorporation of AI methods and techniques in these fields. His main research aim is to make systems a little more smart, intelligent and also reliable. He has led and participated in several research projects sponsored by Portuguese and European public and private Institutions and has supervised several PhD and MSc students. He is the co-author of over 230 book chapters, journal papers, conference and workshop papers and books. He is the president of APPIA (the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence) for 2016/2017 and member of the executive committee of the IBERAMIA (IberoAmerican Society of Artificial Intelligence). During the last years he has served as an expert/reviewer of several institutions such as EU Commission and FCT (Portuguese agency that supports science, technology and innovation).

Davide Carneiro is an Invited Professor at the Department of Informatics of the University of Minho and at the Polytechnic Institute of Porto. He is also a researcher at the Algoritmi center, in the Department of Informatics, University of Minho, Braga, Portugal. He holds a PhD from a joint Doctoral Programme in Computer Science of three top Portuguese Universities. He develops scientific research in the field of Artificial Intelligence, with applications in Human-Computer Interaction and Context-aware Computing. His main interest lies in acquiring information in a non-intrusive way, from the human’s interaction with the computer, namely to assess stress and mental fatigue. He has participated in several research projects in the fields of Ambient Intelligence and Online Dispute Resolution. He is the co-author of several publications in his field of interest, including one book and over fifty book chapters, journal papers and conference and workshop papers. In 2008 he was awarded the TLeIA08 - a National Award for Artificial Intelligence projects attributed by the Portuguese Artificial Intelligence Association and in 2009 he has been awarded an Academic Merit Scholarship by the Portuguese Government.
