Description

The outbreak of Coronavirus in early 2020 resulted in unprecedented changes to health professions education. The pervasive stay-at-home orders resulted in faculty, who were trained for preparing the next generation of health professionals in a traditional learning environment, to throw out their lesson plans and start anew. New approaches to teaching and learning were created on the fly, which introduced several challenges. However, lessons learned from these approaches have also resulted in increased technology adoption, innovative assessment strategies, and increased creativity in the learning environment. This text will explore the various teaching and learning strategies utilized during the pandemic to reach a population of students accustomed to interacting in a traditional classroom. It will further explore the innovative approaches implemented to evaluate student learning outcomes and best practices to ensure academic honesty is considered when conducting assessments in a non-traditional environment.

This book will explore the impact a global pandemic has made on health professions education, specifically lessons learned and best practices. The adoption and implementation of technology as a result of COVID-19 has resulted in innovative and exciting changes in the way we prepare our learners for practice. This text will provide educators with resources and strategies that can be implemented into their current educational environments and into the future. The value of this type of text is to establish a sense of community among educators that these types of challenges are common within the academy and that these challenges have the ability to reinvigorate the educational landscape for future generations of learners.

A potential use for this text includes curriculum and/or course design/redesign, development of policies and procedures within academic programs, and the identification of best practices.
