Description & Coverage
Description:

Virtual teams have been used to leverage scarce and distributed resources for many years. Expense reductions, health epidemics, air travel safety, and complex supply chains have only intensified this need. General best practices for leading and participating in virtual teams are well known but why are there still misconceptions about their effectiveness? What drives the notion that “face to face is always better”? How can groups and individuals take the most advantage of virtual teams through the appropriate use of technology? Working Virtually: Challenges of Virtual Teams provides an in-depth, practical perspective on the growing dependence of virtual teams and how to best exploit them. Based on years of direct experience in managing and participating in virtual teams, as well as developing solutions to help virtual teams be more effective, the authors have provided unique insight that can be leveraged to help you get the most of your virtual teams.

Reviews & Statements

Working Virtually should be especially valuable for team leaders and managers who find themselves working increasingly, and perhaps somewhat reluctantly, with geographically distributed groups of people. The book is full of practical ideas for improving the effectiveness of virtual teams.

– Charles Sieloff, Research Affiliate, Institute for the Future, USA

Information technology offers the promise of exploding boundaries of geography and enabling work practices that better meet the career aspirations and personal needs of individuals. This clearly written book, grounded in a decade of experience within a forward-looking group at Hewlett Packard, provides managers a concise guide to the technologies tools, individual skills and team capabilities that organizations will need to navigate the new world of virtual work.

– Robert Laubacher, Research Scientist, MIT Sloan School of Management, USA

Working Virtually should be used as a primer for all government officials looking for ways to reduce their organization's operating costs. There have been many studies done that show the benefits of working virtually, including happier and more productive employees, reduced traffic, environmental savings and business continuity-related benefits.

– Barbara Burch, U.S. Department of State, USA

My love affair with Idea Group Publishing (this time under their CyberTech imprint) continues with my reading of Working Virtually: The Challenges of Virtual Teams. The book is clearly the result of thoughtful experience.

– Michael Gilbert, the Gilbert Center, in Nonprofit Online News, June 2006

Working Virtually is a simple, practical, and useful reference that will provide quick insight to address virtual team challenges and set the standard.

– Steven P. MacGregor, IESE Business School in The Journal of Product Innovation Management, Vol 24 (2007)
