Overview

Developing the online course instruction is the third and last step of the planning phase of an online course before the actual online teaching phase begins with the subsequent stage, the Deliver Stage. However, as stated previously, the 5Ds model stages are interrelated, and may also overlap in which a stage greatly depends on the proceeding one. For instance, for online instructors to develop a suitable web-based instructional package for an online course, they should have a coherent web-based instructional strategy that is directly developed based on the course’s performance objectives. Horton (2012) argued that “the design of e-Learning never follows a straight path. He says that, “it is iterative, empirical, and cumulative” (E-Learning by Design, p. 64).

The 5Ds model’s Develop Stage is combined of three significant steps, developing the web-based instructional strategy and developing the web-based instructional package, and the online course syllabus and class schedule. The web-based instructional strategy includes two principal parts, grouping the performance/terminal objectives into learning modules and developing a corresponding web-based instructional strategy to teach online. On the other hand, the web-based instructional package is developed based on the instructional strategy of the learning modules. It includes various web-based components including selecting instructional materials (print and mediated), web-based assessments, and an online course management plan. Also, in the Develop Stage, online instructors should develop the online course syllabus and an online class schedule.
