Abstract

The degree of influence that the search purveyors have imposed on the development landscape has been significant given that the search engines have become the proxy for the will of humanity. It is the masses that dictate relevance through their interaction with online content that places this flux upon this voting system that all subscribe to and must subsequently abide by. This flux that has been placed on online content entails that the manner by which web content is to be built in the future must change given technological progress and the fact that it must conform to this voting power of the masses that is held in stewardship by the search purveyors. It will subsequently be the burden of development teams to embrace a new doctrine to their development effort whereby this leverage that was previously not harnessed can now be wielded to create value.

Introduction

Now that it can formally be stated what constitutes relevance in the search space it leads the discussion of the current development paradigm in a new direction. In the current day and time Software as a Service (SaaS) and the public cloud are significant technological leverages, but what does the data convey about where the indexing space is pulling software solutions of the future? Indexing relevance is tied to the roots of web scraping, PageRank and the HITS algorithm. It was from these simple beginnings and the need to classify content that the domain has evolved to its current state that has become the reality of the development effort. It was the same systems that facilitated the deciphering of truth that is inherent in each node of the web that worked to bind society to the constraint that is prevalent currently and which has functioned to simply redefine development. The work of the previous chapters was much like the skeletal structure of those same search engines where truth was deterministic because of the system attributes. The data tabulated in previous chapters helped to facilitate the understanding of the significance of link equity and quality of referral. The previous chapter specifically helped to further refine the world view where it became feasible to come to understand the degree of relevance of each of the attributes that the system incorporated. This reality that can now be deemed a constrained has forced a paradigm shift on the development community and is physically forcing development teams to have to adopt a new mode of operandi where development will remain in part the semblance of the past but will pivot to take a new mold. Development teams seek to create worth for the businesses that employ them through the creation of the systems that will provide a tangible benefit to the organization and to such a degree now that what is sought is for the organization to be named prom king no less. Web solutions not only seek the embrace of users, but they also seek the acceptance of the search providers as their embrace is what greases the wheels for the acceptance by the masses. As a result of this dynamic the rules of engagement that dominate how the game is to be played and how applications are to be built needs to embrace a new mode of existence which facilitates the pairing of the expectation of the search purveyors with that of the inner workings of the applications built. In essence the development community has become slaves to those systems that are a dependency since they represent the gateway to that much needed infusion of subsistence. The prison guards in this penitentiary are the Google, Bing, and Yahoo’s of the world to name but three and it is in vain for the captives to try to escape as the dependency created has been such that it equates to nothing short of gravity. Businesses must play the game and excel at the game because it is the manner by which they can hope to leverage the economics at play. It is almost a game of musical chairs where the chairs have the names of the businesses carved into them and those that refuse to acknowledge and play by the rules are left to sit on the floor.

The constraint of search engine indexing mandates that modern web development along with the modern web architecture adapt and change to the new constructs at play. The ability to sell or become relevant on the internet entails that your product, service or offering have alignment to your online architecture. Gone are the days were technical execution and the business mandate were separate domains. Given the relevance of the web and the fact that being found online can play a pivotal part in the survival of the business it means that it is paramount that a service or product offering contribute to your search prominence. This search presence is directly tied to the attributes of relevance that have been identified in previous chapters. It has therefore become paramount for each unit of development endeavor to take on a twist on an old game in order to be able to leverage the rules of the game that the search providers bind the participants to. To be relevant means to adhere to this mode of development where applications need to be sensitive to the constraints that have been placed upon them as this is the mechanism by which clout is determined. Search engine indexing has changed the development space because popularity is directly proportional to the survivability of the business. Being found online is not only important it now drives the technological work effort.
