Abstract

It is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore cannabis as a resource that has the potential to drive socioeconomic development in indigenous communities. This resource has for a long time been an overlooked commodity within indigenous communities based on the negative perceptions and stigma that surround it. Cannabis has the potential to contribute towards the economy and various indigenous communities in South Africa such as AmaMpondo in the Eastern Cape Province are found to be the most producing area of cannabis for various purposes that contributes towards their local and household sustainability. This chapter applies a qualitative document analysis (QDA) to elucidate meaning on the trends and arguments within the agricultural cannabis thematic area.
