A Reflection Of Transitioning To Online Learning

Faculty are jumping into online teaching. Some faculty are on board, some are not. Some faculty have developed online coursework before, some are starting a new endeavor. Either way, online teaching has become a necessity for the COVID- 19 world. With this transition to online teaching, professors may fear that online learning might not be enough to meet our students’ learning needs, this is unlike face to face courses where they felt comfortable and have traditionally taught in a way that meets student’s needs (Harlbut, 2017). It can be daunting changing from a face to face class to online learning that requires teachers to present information and teach students in a totally online or hybrid method. Teaching online may not only be a new endeavor for the teacher, but also the student. Teachers should be forgiving of themselves and of students while transitioning to this new way of learning. This chapter explores teaching online during these extraordinary times and aims to help those that are novices to the online teaching environment by offering ideas and points to consider while creating their online coursework. This is done through the author’s reflections on making this transition with a decade of experience in teaching online.
