Abstract

Growing affluence and urbanization are commanding huge demand for fossil fuels. Energy security and sustainable development have gained attention in the current global environment. Many businesses and consumers are becoming aware and concerned about damage to the environment. Huge amount of energy can be saved by using energy efficient equipment. Lighting accounts for about 30 percent of total residential electricity use. LED bulbs are being used as an energy-efficient lamp with an objective of conserving energy. The paper examines the adoption of energy efficient lighting technologies in Mumbai households. A survey was administered to examine how the environmental concern, environmental responsible behaviour and perceived value of LED Bulbs products impact its adoption by the consumers. The study validates that factors such as perceived value, environmental concern and environmentally responsible behaviour are instrumental in stimulating the adoption of LED bulbs among users.

Introduction

Conserving environmental and natural resources is one of the biggest challenges for ensuring the sustainability of human-being over time. Climate change often referred as global warming pertains to the rise in average surface temperatures on Earth. A scientific consensus maintains that the rising level of atmospheric CO2 due to excessive usage of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas is impacting the climate in an unpredictable ways. The efforts to cope up with the impacts of climate change highlight the increasing interest in sustainability (Huang and Rust 2011; Polonsky 2011). Therefore, energy security and sustainable development have become more important in the current global environment (Leelakulthanit, 2014). There is need to hunt for secure, clean, affordable energy supplies and promote climate change mitigation action. The concern over climate change calls into question the ability of cities and individuals to impact their environment.

Many companies like Coca-Cola, United Parcel Service (UPS), Levi Strauss, MillerCoors, PG&E, Unilever, and Walmart have made commitments to increase the sustainability of their business practices (“Leading Companies, Investors Band Together” 2011). For instance, Unilever has proposed a Sustainable Living Plan with an aim to reduce the ecological footprint of its products by 50 percent by 2020 (“Unilever Tops Global Sustainability Survey” 2011). These companies are taking initiatives to reduce the environmental burden of business operations and achieve a sustainable society. Also, many organizations are developing and implementing sustainable technologies to enhance their triple bottom line (Crosno & Cui, 2014). Sustainable energy strategies can be an important contributor to the climate change mitigation efforts globally. The sustainable energy solutions look for efficient energy use and renewable energy along with the innovative solutions for the sustainability problems arising from the energy industry. It calls for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through behaviour change and sustainable consumption at micro and macro level of a country. The paper aims to reflect on the role of micro level factors on adoption of sustainable energy solutions with reference to LED bulbs in Mumbai1.
