Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate art and design education in terms of academicians in the pandemic period and to make suggestions against this situation. As a methodology of the study, a survey was conducted with the academicians working in art and design departments with a random sampling method, and data were collected and analyzed. As a result of the study, it was determined that the level of success in theoretical courses in online education increased, and applied courses were not efficient. The study aims to contribute to the literature by determining field-specific results to be a reference for future studies and improve the infrastructure of higher education institutions.

Introduction

The current outbreak of coronavirus COVID-19, centered in China in 2019, spread rapidly all over the world and caused the death of many people, was the beginning of a new era that affected social life. Like many other aspects of everyday life, students, instructors, and educational institutions were seriously affected by the epidemic (Mailizar et al., 2020). In order to keep social distance and prevent the spread of the virus, significant decisions were taken in the field of education, as in every field. Weeden and Cornwell (2020) state that with the measures taken such as social distance, interpersonal communication is tried to be reduced and minimized in places with a social density such as university campuses. In the researches, considering the spread of the virus, it is seen that decisions such as closing schools, interrupting education or switching to distance education have been made (Aristovnik, et al. 2020; Bozkurt 2020; Crawford et al. 2020; Doghonadze et al. 2020; Erkut 2020; Owusu-Fordjour et al. 2020; Toquero 2020; Yang and Huang 2020).
