Abstract

Indie documentary filmmaking in Malaysia offers a crucial platform for authentic narratives and critical social issues. Despite its cultural value, indie filmmakers face barriers affecting production, distribution, and recognition. Restricted access to mainstream distribution limits audience reach, while financial constraints compromise production quality and marketing. Furthermore, regulatory challenges and legal complexities restrict creative freedom, hindering the growth of Malaysia's indie documentary sector. Overcoming these requires enhanced infrastructure, financial backing, supportive regulatory frameworks, and increased acknowledgment of indie documentaries' cultural contributions, all necessitating collaborative efforts among policymakers, industry players, and the filmmaking community.
