Abstract

Urban street design plays a vital role in shaping sustainable and inclusive cities by promoting walkability, connectivity, and placemaking. This study examines Vikas Marg in Delhi as a case of equitable road space allocation and effective urban design. Drawing on principles from The Image of the City, Theory of a Good City, and A Hidden Dimension, the research highlights the street's transformation toward legibility, inclusivity, and environmental quality. Through spatial analysis, stakeholder observations, and design evaluation, the study identifies initial challenges such as traffic congestion, inadequate pedestrian facilities, and lack of greenery. The redesigned street demonstrates how integrated design interventions can create vibrant, people-centric public spaces that enhance mobility, social interaction, and urban livability.
