Abstract

Fractions are among some concepts in mathematics that pupils in Nigeria primary find difficult to learn, and teachers find difficult to teach. These problems require solutions because mathematics knowledge is germane for technological advancement and national development. Pupils need to be actively involved in constructing their knowledge and digital mathematics learning games could be helpful. Thus, this study investigated the effects of digital mathematics games on primary pupils' achievement in fractions concepts. An appropriately validated pupil fractions achievement test (PFAT) was used to collect data for the study. Data collected were analyzed using t-test. It was revealed that pupils exposed to digital mathematics games performed significantly better than those exposed to conventional method. There is significant difference between achievements of male and female pupils exposed to game-based strategy.

Mathematics In Nigeria Schools

Mathematics plays an integral role in art, music, games, explorations, inventions, and commerce within virtually any culture. People in all societies have devised their own ways of doing mathematics consciously and unconsciously ranging from traditional farmers to modern scientists who are involved in one activity or the other, even the women in the kitchen apply reasonable knowledge of mathematics in adding ingredients together and timing of activities in cooking or catering. Often, taking Nigeria as an example, a few pupils are successful in the discipline in schools and there is a phobia for the subject in the society. Lending credence to this report on Nigeria, Salman (2005) confirmed that pupils dislike certain topics in Mathematics because of the belief that they are difficult. Yet, science evolved with the use of mathematical principles and Mathematics is a necessary tool needed by individuals to be able to function effectively in the present technological age.
