Abstract

Smart cities are established on some smart components such as smart governances, smart economy, science and technology, smart politics, smart transportation, and smart life. Each and every smart object is interconnected through the internet, challenging the security and privacy of citizen's sensitive information. A secure framework for smart cities is the only solution for better and smart living. This can be achieved through IoT infrastructure and cloud computing. The combination of IoT and Cloud also increases the storage capacity and computational power and make services pervasive, cost-effective, and accessed from anywhere and any device. This chapter will discuss security issues and challenges of smart city along with cyber security framework and architecture of smart cities for smart infrastructures and smart applications. It also presents a general study about security mechanism for smart city applications and security protection methodology using IOT service to stand against cyber-attacks.

Introduction

The concept of “Smart City “has stimulated highly in past two decades increasing demand in almost all fields in urban world since it has strong real-world background and realistic prerequisites. According to the latest study conducted by United Nations Population Fund above half of the world population resides in urban zone and it is anticipated by 2050 above 66 percent of the world’s population will live in urban area (“Department of Economic and Social Affairs”, 2014).

By the development of Information and communication technologies (ICT), cellular phones, global positioning system (GPS), Bluetooth, Wi-Fi etc. human beings are connected via numerous smart devices such as smartphones and smart gadgets (Bogatinoska, Malekian, Trengoska, & Nyako, 2016).

Advancements in high connectivity using Internet of Things, connectivity between vehicles, public places, institutions, homes and other social systems are connected with smart appliances, security devices and smart energy meters are being used in many cities improving the quality of life.

City infrastructures and services are refining by new updated systems of automating, controlling and monitoring to take full benefit from them. For instance integrated systems will assist an emergency responders and public safety in disaster recovery. Smart transport will help both public and private vehicles to access the updates from GPS location about weather and traffic.

Pillars of Smart Cities

  • 1.

Institutional Infrastructure: Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) delivered smart system designed for citizens for performing activities like smart governance, planning and management of city in effective, efficient, transparent and accountable.

  • 2.

Physical Infrastructure: Physical infrastructure states to smart infrastructure integrated with technologies such as high speed broadband infrastructure, energy system, water supply system, sewerage system, drainage system, solid waste management system etc.

  • 3.

Social Infrastructure: Social infrastructure pertain to the development of social values such as education, healthcare, entertainment, creativities, arts, sports, gardening, open spaces and children’s parks.

  • 4.

Economic Infrastructure: It relates to emerging of economic infrastructure that can generate income, investments and employment.

  • 5.

Smart Analysis: With emergence of smart cities interaction, information gathering and interpretation has increased. How to act and react in critical conditions are provided by smart analysis.

  • 6.

Transmission Analysis: Analysis for information security at all stages of data storage and transmission in big data will be triggered.
