Mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) has received substantial attention from both scholars and English teachers. In line with this development, mobile apps provide tools to create interactive videos. suggesting their value and potential to improve listening activities. This paper critically examines the extent Edpuzzle app influenced the development of students' listening abilities. Participants were 52 first-year, non-English majors with elementary English proficiency from a higher education institution in Vietnam. Three data collection tools, including tests (pre- and post-test), a questionnaire, and an interview, were used in the study's mixed-methods design. The post-tests revealed that for listening skills, EG fared better than CG. Additionally, the results of the survey and interview reveal that the experimental group had a favorable perception of the application of Edpuzzle to listening practice. It is concluded that the Edpuzzle app's MALL and interactive videos support effective learning outcomes, especially in EFL listening practice.
Top1. Introduction
Over the history of language teaching, a range of methods and approaches have been developed to provide learners with opportunities to develop their knowledge of language and language skills. In recent times, the shift in language teaching trends from teacher-centered and learning-centered to learner-centered has been aided by the advancement of technology and the internet (Vu et al., 2021). This has had a big impact on how languages are taught and learned, especially when it comes to how information and communication technology (ICT) is used to educate and learn the English language. Mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) is a process of building listening skills using mobile devices and technology, and it has attracted substantial interest from educators, researchers, and teachers across the globe, including in Vietnam (Minh & Anh, 2020).
It is generally acknowledged that learning a language entail not just knowing it inside and out, but also being able to apply your language abilities correctly in various situations. Learning to listen is a crucial part of learning a second language, but many EFL students, particularly those in Vietnam, have difficulty developing this ability. Giving students the chance to learn and practice using English on their own while also making the learning process more active and participatory is crucial in a learner-centered educational setting (Manna, 2023; Păcurar, 2018).
In addition to CDs, cassette recordings, and tapes, videos have become a prevalent medium for teaching English listening skills. With the rise of mobile applications, interactive video tools have demonstrated their capacity to engage students in immersive listening exercises. The incorporation of interactive videos in mobile apps for teaching and learning English listening skills has seen significant growth (Pham, 2022). However, the effectiveness of such integration, especially in enhancing the listening abilities of non-English major students, remains underexplored in academic research.
This research tries to evaluate the impact of employing the interactive Edpuzzle mobile app on the listening competencies of EFL learners at SaigonTech College in Vietnam. Additionally, the investigation will explore the students' perceptions of using the Edpuzzle app on their mobile devices. The main goal is to evaluate the efficiency of integrating interactive videos into mobile apps for the purpose of teaching and learning listening skills by addressing two research questions. Previous studies have concentrated on the efficacy of interactive video tools within mobile apps for enhancing student engagement and performance across various skill sets (Hamzah, 2023; Singh & Mohan, 2019). So, this study focuses on 2 research questions:
By investigating the effectiveness of using the Edpuzzle mobile app to enhance listening skills among EFL learners, this study contributes to the literature of MALL and the use of interactive video in mobile apps for language teaching. It is hoped that the findings of this study will benefit teachers, students, and researchers in exploring innovative ways to improve language teaching and learning outcomes.
