Abstract

In this chapter, the authors explore equity issues in the learning and teaching of mathematics. Specifically, the authors define equity in relation to teaching mathematics and synthesize four equity-directed pedagogical approaches that have the potential to improve students' educational experiences: standards-based mathematics instruction, complex instruction, culturally relevant pedagogy, and teaching mathematics for social justice. The authors provide a brief overview of Gutiérrez's (2007) Dimensions of Learning Equity framework to frame the exploration. This chapter contributes to the existing knowledge base of systemic barriers that exclude students from learning mathematics and practices that make mathematics education more inclusive.
