Abstract

This chapter investigated if communication between the European Union, the United States, and Russia has changed since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. A comparative mixed-method approach based on the philosophies of liberalism, realism, and social constructivism has been employed to achieve this. Frequency analysis and ideological analysis of speeches and declarations made by influential people from the European Union and the United States were combined to create the mixed technique. The key finding of this chapter is that since the commencement of the conflict, the communication between both players has evolved from a liberal stance to a more realistic standpoint. The fundamental contrast between the actors was evident before the conflict when the European Union adopted a predominantly liberal strategy while the United States adopted a mixed approach of liberalism and realism. The shifting nature of the world might explain the altered communicative strategy.

Purpose And Question

This chapter examines the EU and US’s communication with Russia before, during, and after the invasion of Ukraine using three theories from past research. To check communication style. The study will use qualitative idea analysis and quantitative frequency analysis. The chapter will use liberalism, realism, and social constructivism to explain international relations. This theory is chosen because it focuses on the international realm, its structure, and its behaviors. These three theories reflect different perspectives on international relations, making them a solid choice (Baylis et al., 2020). The issue is three-part because the chapter analyses and investigates EU-US contrasts before and after Russia invaded Ukraine and examines the communicative strategy. Based on this, the following questions have been raised:

  • In what way, if anything, has the EU’s and US’s communicative approach to Russia changed since the country’s invasion of Ukraine?

  • What differences exist in the official communication between the EU and the US vis-à-vis Russia?

  • What can explain the official communicative approach of the EU and the US?

Key Terms in this Chapter

Russian Invasion of Ukraine: The military intervention by Russia in Ukraine, which began in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea and subsequent support for separatist movements in eastern Ukraine. It refers to the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine, involving territorial disputes, geopolitical tensions, and international repercussions.

Social Constructivism: A theoretical framework that emphasizes the role of social interactions, norms, and shared meanings in shaping international relations. Social constructivism suggests that the EU, the US, and Russia’s communicative approaches are influenced by their perceptions of their roles as key actors in the global arena and their relationships with one another.

Realism: A political theory that emphasizes the pursuit of national self-interest and the Balance of power among states. In this research, realism denotes a communicative approach characterized by a focus on national security concerns, strategic calculations, and a pragmatic assessment of the geopolitical landscape.

Comparative Mixed-Method Approach: A research methodology that combines qualitative and quantitative techniques to analyze and compare data from different sources. It involves integrating approaches such as frequency analysis and ideological analysis to gain a comprehensive understanding of the research topic and draw meaningful conclusions.

Liberalism: A political ideology emphasizing individual rights, freedoms, democracy, and the rule of law. In the context of this study, liberalism refers to a communicative strategy that prioritizes diplomatic engagement, dialogue, and cooperation to resolve conflicts and promote shared values and interests.

Political Communicative Approach: The strategic and intentional methods used by political actors to convey messages, opinions, and policies in the realm of international relations. It encompasses the communication strategies, rhetoric, and ideological frameworks employed to engage with other countries or entities.
