Abstract

OpenStreetMap (OSM) offers a powerful and versatile alternative to traditional map providers for smart destinations. This chapter explored the key advantages of OSM, including its collaborative data model, open licensing, and integration potential. The chapter then delved into various applications of OSM for smart destinations. By leveraging OSM's data and integration capabilities, destinations can create detailed and user-centric maps, enhance navigation with real-time data, and tailor experiences for different visitor segments. Integration with mobile applications, public transit systems, and location-based services further enriches the visitor experience by providing a comprehensive navigation ecosystem and personalized recommendations. However, the chapter also acknowledged the challenges associated with using OSM. Data quality and consistency can vary across regions, and maintaining and updating the data requires dedicated resources. Integration with other platforms presents technical complexities that necessitate specific expertise.
