Abstract

The rise of digital streaming platforms has significantly disrupted the traditional models of production, distribution, and consumption in the Malaysian film industry. This shift has led to both opportunities and challenges, including democratized access to film distribution, a diversification of the film landscape, and the transformation of audience consumption habits. However, the transition also presents difficulties, such as increased competition with global content and the risk of diluting local narratives. The aim of this chapter is to explore how digital streaming platforms have transformed the Malaysian film industry, focusing on the impact of new technologies on production and distribution, the shift in audience consumption patterns, and the challenges posed by globalisation. It will also examine how these changes have created opportunities for indie filmmakers while addressing the broader implications for the future of Malaysian cinema.
