The progressive research in the field of internet of things provides a platform to develop high performance and robust automated systems to control external devices via internet data transfer and cloud computing. The present emerging IoT research including user-friendly and easily-wearable sensors and signal acquisition techniques have made it possible to expand the IoT application areas towards healthcare sector. This chapter aims at providing a rationale behind development of IoT applications in healthcare, architecture details of internet of healthcare things (IoHT), and highlights a step-by-step development of IoT-based heart rate measurement and monitoring system using Arduino. The developed module has been advanced to transmit data over the internet on the ThingSpeak channel to allow remote monitoring in real time. This may help to improve/restore useful life among cardiac patients via real-time monitoring through remote locations.

Iot In Healthcare: Need And Challenges

Earlier the patients were required to visit doctors personally as per physician’s availability or they need to rely on tele/text communications. It was not possible to continuously monitor the patient’s health via remote access. The Internet of things platform have revolutionized the healthcare sector by making live remote monitoring possible in real time. It has undoubtedly transformed the healthcare sector by reducing the need to visit hospitals physically, decreasing the stay time at hospitals, timely disease diagnosis and management at an early stage in real time, minimizing healthcare logistics and thus improving overall treatment solutions for patients particularly aged population, their families, doctors and hospitals.

According to well known saying Health is wealth, it is the need of an hour to utilize innovation for sustainable and improved healthcare facilities. The researchers are developing and implementing more efficient IoT frameworks to provide early diagnosis facilities and immediate medical aid. These are designed to acquire subject’s health parameters through embedded sensors and transmit it over the cloud to be monitored by approved clients. The whole IoT network includes sensors to acquire initial data, wireless networks to transmit and receive data to and from the cloud, respectively.

Let us imagine a situation where most of the patient’s body parameters such as blood pressure, pulse rate, brain signals, muscle signals, and other vital parameters are acquired by the sensors embedded to his/her body. The subject does not even need to visit hospitals for body checkups and subsequent treatments. Rather he can even get his all the medical examinations at home itself with the implementation of portable medical equipments, sensors etc. The physicians can remotely monitor their body parameters and can appropriately guide them as per the received data at regular intervals. These advancements can definitely lead subjects towards a quality life.
