Methodological Approaches on Fuzzy Logic Applications in Selected Companies

Abstract

The chapter is based on fuzzy logic approaches to machinery failure analysis. Six companies and organisations were used as model validation case studies. At a platinum mining company, the research was based on the root cause analysis technique. The objective was to determine the major causes of failure of the pebble crusher, to estimate between the major crusher failures, and to provide suitable solutions that included the optimization of the crushing circuit. The second application was done on beverages manufacturing companies focusing on the bottle washing process. The third company used a reactive and firefighting maintenance strategy which resulted in frequent catastrophic breakdowns, ever increasing maintenance costs, and long, unplanned plant shutdowns. The fourth was done for a hydropower generation company. The dynamic characteristics of these systems are nonlinear and difficult to predict. The fifth case study application focused on the water gate control and avoidance of its failure. The sixth and final case study application was at a thermal power generation company.

Introduction

Measuring knowledge management is a critical basis for developing incentives for further stimulating knowledge sharing and networking on local and global levels. Without quantifiability, measurement endeavours remains elusive. Further, it is critical to ensure that existing knowledge assets are constantly challenged in a purposeful way. Especially in the current Internet Age, where today’s core competencies quickly turn into tomorrow’s core rigidities, it is incumbent upon companies to ensure that the knowledge they nurture inside is still relevant to the market thus, the need to explicitly address the issue of developing metrics and incentives for knowledge management. The key success factors of developing a working AI at a company are:

  • Effective and systematic processes

  • Measures

  • Costs

Methods Of The Study

When conducting a research, one has to use either quantitative or qualitative method. The qualitative format is in the form of an essay whilst a quantitative makes use of numerical scoring and grading.

On qualitative research basis for the course of action (Bryman, Social Research Methods, 2004) (Mathi, 2004) and (Bryman, Quantity and Quality in Social Research, 1988)mentions that there are five ways to choose from, i.e

  • Experiment,

  • Survey,

  • Qualitative research,

  • Case study and

  • Action research (Mathi, 2004)

According to (Alasuutari, 1996) a qualitative research process involves two phases: the Purification of Observations and the Unriddling.
