Environmental sustainability and customer response times will continue to remain the vanguard of every business. Being energy efficient is a step towards achieving environmental sustainability. The six-sigma methodology has been adopted by organizations for systematic conservation of energy. Customer responses can be improved by reducing the product supply lead time. The value stream mapping methodology has been used by several organizations to reduce product supply lead time with encouraging results. This chapter describes the use of methodologies such as six sigma and value stream mapping for reducing energy and improving the supply lead time respectively by means of two real life examples. The names of the respective organizations are disguised to protect confidentiality.

ABC Example

In the past, environmental problems, such as toxic waste, poisoned drinking water, poor air quality, and climate change, were viewed as quality-of-life issues. Now, these are seen as survival issues. Business are increasingly concerned about global warming and pollution. Stringent environmental regulations, particularly in developed nations, are being enforced. Business organizations are under pressure to reduce their carbon footprint (the amount of carbon di oxide generated by their operations and supply chains) and to operate sustainable processes. Sustainability refers to service and production processes, that use resources in ways that do not harm ecological systems that support both current and future human existence. One of the objectives of this chapter is to explain the initiatives taken by ABC India -the Indian arm of ABC’s global business of infrastructure and energy solutions, automation and software, and medical imaging equipment- for creating a sustainable environment

XYZ Example

Most businesses realize that, to prosper, they must view customers, suppliers, facility locations, and competitors in global terms. When a firm’s operations are scattered globally, customer response times can be longer. Regardless of the area of the world, the challenge is to produce services or products that can compete in a global market, and to design the processes that can make it happen. The other objective of this chapter is to present the ingenuities adopted by XYZ-a leading global provider of traceability systems- to reduce the lead time for supply of its products by improvements in the product design phase.
