To be digitally relevant in current times has become as important as ever given the dependence of electronic commerce and the quantity of alternatives that users have at their disposal to spend their funds. To become digitally relevant entails to become significant to the masses, it means to be able to leverage those systems that are currently in place that can help the organization move from the depths of obscurity to relevance. This degree of relevance in the digital age has taken on more of a significance given the quantity of digital natives that make up the population. In recent times the name of a company has been elevated to a verb to denote searching on the internet. Being digitally relevant has surpassed basic business as it fulfills a central need of the masses to find what they need. Businesses need to be digitally relevant to remain afloat as their subsistence is directly tied to their notoriety with the populous. These organizations need to be able to have a larger marketing presence than their competitors, the probability of their survival demands it. Being digitally relevant means that the potential to make a sale is increased. In the days of the phonebook there were companies that had a name that began with the letter ‘A’ for the simple fact that it would facilitate their finding when individuals looked through a list of companies. Those physical references are now long gone and the name of a business matters little as it is now the notoriety of the business domain that plays a pivotal role in the branding of the business, as one can attest to by noting of the popularity of domains such as Google.com and Uber.com. The search for notoriety is a central theme of all businesses as their survival demands it, in the digital age however the playbook has changed, the need to leverage technology has been enhanced and it will be those businesses that excel at its execution that will succeed independently of the first letter in their name. To take a business to the realm of digital relevance means that the business has a chance to survive and to survive digitally has never taken on as a heightened level of importance than it did during the COVID pandemic. Mall foot traffic was replaced by traffic on the digital highway, it no longer matters if the business is a large department store as it only matters if potential customers are able to find the store front. To be digitally relevant means to have that breath of fresh air after being underwater for a prolonged period, it is the differentiator between life and death to business. To be digitally relevant means to lessen the magnitude of disappointment by elevating the reality component to meet the expectation component or better yet to have reality exceed expectations and thus to upend disappointment all together. The reality that is proposed here has been in the making for quite some time as technological advances do not happen in a vacuum or are the result of a cosmic bang. Technological advances occur because of the constant flux that technology brings to the forefront and lays bare at the feet of those that dare to take hold of it. Those businesses that adapt and change will benefit and find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow much as has been the case for Amazon. Amazon was founded in a garage and the inventory in that garage was sold over the internet. The storefront that is available to each customer is such because of the information highway, it masks the obscurity of the reality that humanity find itself under at times and has consequently levelled the playing field for all would be entrepreneurs. The story of Amazon is a story of a dream being at the right place at the right time in history at least in part and this is where the profession finds itself now. Technologists find themselves at a junction in time that mandates a paradigm shift and those businesses that are able to capitalize on the new breed of Micro Distributed Applications (MDAs) will stand to win the indexing race and be propelled to the winner’s circle and those businesses that do not capitalize on the opportunity that exists will become irrelevant and much like that garage that was the warehouse for Amazon at one time will simply become faceless structures in the landscape.
