Abstract

OpenStreetMap offers significant advantages for emerging markets, including cost-effectiveness, local knowledge utilization, scalability, adaptability, and integration with digital services. These benefits empower communities to map their environments, fostering economic growth, mobility, and access to services. OSM's democratized mapping data enables local entrepreneurs to innovate without high financial burdens. Leveraging local knowledge ensures maps are accurate and up-to-date, reflecting dynamic infrastructure landscapes and fostering community resilience. However, limited internet connectivity, low digital literacy, inadequate mapping resources, and political and social barriers can hinder OSM's effective use. Ensuring data accuracy and sustaining community engagement are crucial. Solutions like offline editing tools, lightweight mapping applications, community-driven network initiatives, and training and continuous support are essential.
