Abstract

The objective of IoT in healthcare is to empower people to live healthy lives by wearing connected equipment. The healthcare industry has perpetually been in the forefront in the adoption and utilization of information and communication technologies (ICT) for the efficient healthcare administration). Detection of atrial fibrillation is done by checking the variations in the period of the heart rate. If a patient has atrial fibrillation, the period between each heartbeat will vary. A gas sensor is used to check the quality of air and a MEMS sensor to detect the fall of the body. The MEMS sensor is a compact device that collects comprehensive physical information and uses the gateway and cloud to analyze and store information.

Background

Fall Detection- Falls are responsible for 40% of all injury related deaths and need immediate medical attention. The reason for a fall may be heart problems, loss of consciousness, fatigue, exhaustion, diseases and loss of balance. The two major factors that affect a fall is that, firstly, it requires an immediate attention by medical supervision which is in lot of cases not provided due to unawareness of the situation of the fall and the way to overcome is to provide a sensing method to send an alert to the caretaker when the fall happens. Secondly, falls limits the individual movement or independence. A person who experienced a fall may have to remain in that state depending on the severity of the fall if the person become unconscious and unable to move. Person may have to stay alone for extended period of time. At such situation, immediate medical attention may be required which won’t proceeded until unless the caretaker is aware of the situation.

Pollution/Air Quality - The patient requires to stay in a healthy toxic free environment for better recovery. Breathing in harmful gases may deteriorate health conditions. Thus, a gas sensor which detects presence of toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, methane, LPG and will act as a precaution measure to prevent the patient from going to such places and take measures if the patients is already living in such conditions.
