Background

In order to discuss about present state of Swarm Intelligence and have an objective idea about the future, basics of the related algorithms covered in this chapter should be explained first. Because the term of Swarm Intelligence has been expressed indirectly at the beginning, background section of this chapter is devoted to the algorithms.

Key Terms in this Chapter

Objective Function: The function, which is optimized within an optimization approach and the related problem.

Artificial Intelligence: (1) A term describing the feature, function or characteristic of computer systems or machines trying to simulate human-thinking behavior or human intelligence. (2) A field of the Computer Science, which is based on research studies or developments about providing intelligent systems simulating the human-thinking behavior or human intelligence.

Solution Space: The space of all potential solutions for a problem.

Pseudo-Code: A program flow defining a specific algorithm via linguistic and half-mathematical descriptions.

Optimization: The mathematical approach for finding the most appropriate solution for a problem function having some pre-determined constraints.

Swarm Intelligence: Some kind of intelligence defining collective behaviors of swarms in the nature, or artificial self-organized systems in an algorithm.

Benchmark Function: The function, which can be used to test performance of any optimization approach and the related problem.
