Abstract

Tourism can be a powerful vehicle for changing people's thinking and behavior both during travel and upon their return home. While proponents of sustainable travel are to be applauded for their work in delivering benefits to host communities, To fully realize ideals like sustainability, the industry must work toward inspiring enduring changes of behavior that ensure the health and well-being of the individual and their economic, sociocultural, and ecological environments. The present study aims to review variables and behavioral theories originating from social and environmental psychology as applied to transport research, to better understand decision-making mechanisms, information processing, and modal choice. This study will provide an overview of the main psycho-social variables that explain behavior and, notably, pro-environment behavior. Furthermore, the strengths and weaknesses of using psycho-social variables to predict travel behavior to be discussed.
