TopProf. S. B. Ghosh
S. B. Ghosh, a Fulbright Scholar, obtained his Ph. D. Degree in Library and Information Science from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. He has unique experience as professional librarian and teacher of library and information science. He served as the librarian of a national level organization, Geological Survey of India Libraries Complex, for 18 years and as a teacher in LIS for about 28 years, at Associateship in Information Science Course of the Indian National Scientific Documentation Center of CSIR and at the Indira Gandhi National Open University. At present, he is associated with various universities as UGC Visiting Professor in Library and Information Science. He was associated with the Associateship in Information Science course of INSDOC (now NISCAIR) for 18 years and also with the open and distance education programme of the Indira Gandhi National Open University, where he served as Professor and Chairman of Faculty of Library and Information Science for 10 years. He has been responsible for developing courses from Certificate to Masters Degree level and Ph.D. courses for IGNOU on distance mode. He is Member of Board of Studies of several universities including NISCAIR, Kurukshetra University, and Punjabi University. At present, he is serving as the UGC Visiting Professor in Library and Information Science at the Calcutta, Jadavpur, Burdwan, Kalyani, Vidyasagar, and Rabindra Bharati universities. Prof. Ghosh chaired many sessions of national and international conferences. Some of the notable ones are IFLA/SET session at Milan (Italy), International Conference on Digital Libraries, New Delhi, FID General Assembly and Congress, New Delhi and Jaipur, 1998. His Organizational Capacity and administrative experiences are witnessed as he was entrusted with the position of Secretary General of 49th General Assembly and Congress of International Federation of Information and Documentation (FID), Secretary of the National Conference of the Indian Association of Special Libraries and Information Centers at New Delhi. He also organized IFLA/RSCAO Midterm Meeting at New Delhi in 2008. Prof. Ghosh is also a very active library and information professional. He has been the President of the Indian Association of Special Libraries and Information Centers (IASLIC). He was the Vice President of Indian Association of Teachers in Library Science and Council Member of the Indian Library Association. He also acted as the Secretary General of 49th FID Congress and General Assembly, 1998, held at New Delhi. At present, he is a Standing Committee Member of IFLA/Section on Education and Training (SET) since 2006 and also of IFLA/Regional Section on Asia and Oceania Standing Committee Member since 2006. He is also the Program Committee member of Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI). He served as a member of the committee constituted for the development of Guidelines for LIS education by IFLA/SET which has been published in 2012. Prof. Ghosh has traveled widely in India and across the world in connection with different assignments like delivery of lectures, fellowships, chairing sessions, and participation in various expert committee meetings. Prof. Ghosh, a teacher par excellence, has been awarded the IATLIS Best Teacher Award and also Best Researcher Award by IGNOU in recognition to his contribution in teaching and research in library and information science.
