Abstract

This chapter examines the integration of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and Restorative Practices (RP) as a transformative approach to school discipline. Traditional punitive measures, like suspensions and expulsions, disproportionately harm marginalized students and fail to address root behavioral causes. Embedding SEL within restorative justice frameworks fosters empathy, accountability, and conflict resolution, reducing behavioral incidents and strengthening relationships. The chapter explores SEL competencies that support emotional regulation and highlights restorative justice circles, peer mediation, and culturally responsive approaches. It also addresses challenges such as staff resistance, policy constraints, and funding limitations, offering strategies for professional development, community partnerships, and policy advocacy to ensure sustainable implementation.
