Abstract

Internet of things is a revolutionary domain, when we use it for the wellness of people in a smart way. As of now, the cost to implement IoT-enabled services is very high. So, this chapter introduces a cost effective and a reliable system to monitor patients at home and in hospitals with the help of IoT. The monitored details of a person can be drawn at any time with the help of an android app, which can produce output at real-time. The processed data are stored in the UBIDOTS cloud server, and the patients' needs can be met in time as well lives saved during critical cases with the help of the system proposed in this chapter.

Introduction

A Computer system that controls and accomplishes all the data in the hospital database to provide effective health care is called hospital information system (HIS). These health care systems have been existing since 1960s and have developed over time with better facilities. When they were in early stages, those systems didn’t provide solution faster when applied in real time, but now system provide solution faster and reliable. The introduction of HIS made billing and inventor easier for the staff. But, now all the hospitals want to integrate the clinical, financial and other reports together to make the entire process a closed loop. This not only benefits the staff and patients to track the details but also make the discharge process also easier and faster.

Modern healthcare system requires integration of various departments which can be categorized as Core modules, supporting modules and Enterprise modules. Code Module includes Patient Accounts, Diagnostic Imaging, Radiology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Otolaryngology, etc. Supporting Modules includes Blood Bank, Elderly services, General Services, Patient Services, Purchasing & Supplies, Therapy, Pharmacy and Health & Safety. Enterprise management include Finance and Human Resources. These departments need to be integrated to retrieve patient details easily during emergencies and discharge.

Earlier there used to be many systems which provide the facility for managing the clinical records which are fixed at a place. It is quite complicated to get the information and make this data available at patient’s bed side. The attendants for the patient have to physically go to the location and manually enter that data into those PC’s which can lead to redundancy, data misplacement and errors in recording the data. This leads to considerable amount of wastage of time in moving to those storage PCs and also the cost afforded is comparatively high. Now-a-days, almost all the European countries are already having local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN). This eliminates the conventional process of treatment for the patient.

When maintaining the clinical record, many other details should be continuously monitored like whether the hospital bills are clear as per the due date which is to be collected from the administration department and also the availability of all the essential drugs to be supplied for the patient should be checked in advance from the logistics department. All this patient data must be exchanged between doctor and nurse and always they should be synchronized accordingly.

This problem can be handled by having mobile computers which are connected to a central database through the wireless connection. The servers will be connected to the wired or wireless LAN with hospital systems. The appropriate alert messages can be triggered by the server if the drugs are out of stock or if the patient needs to be attended by the doctor at the hour. Many systems are already being developed using wireless technologies by provided personal digital assistant (PDA) in hand.

As the world is moving with science and its latest inventions, there is a need for everyone to revolutionize the field of healthcare with them. The healthcare is a lifesaving division and is very much needed by any individual at any time. So, there should be a mandatory improvement that should be done to make healthcare more reliable and cost effective. Internet ia a big boon for the development of iot in all fields as the number of internet users have increased in a tremendous rate. This makes the iot to come into play. Which will make life easy for every individual? Assume a life where things get initiated on its own, where you need not have to produce a reminder or think about it. i.e If the milk in the refrigerator is going to be out of stock in another few hours. The iot enabled refrigerator will automatically order for milk to a nearby super market through sms or email or through an e-shopping site. Consider a hospital where there is a lack of staffs the patients admitted in the hospital should be given proper care or medication like i.e saline, pills, syringes etc in most needed time. If the hospital is iot enabled, one means the patient relatives can take care of them because iot enabled in a hospital will initiate all the needs of the patient on time. So, this can be done in a systematic way.
