Abstract

This chapter takes responsibility for defining and initiating the leadership ability of the students in relation to the workplace – not just now but the changing workplace they have ahead of them and not in the way it has been before but in a way which accommodates their different approach and attitudes. Using the team based approach the focus is on the range of skills they need to develop to become leaders in the modern and future workplace. This also includes looking at the leadership they themselves need to bring this about. In addition to exploring how this would manifest at staff operational level, the importance of strategic alignment and visioning is emphasized so all activity is related to business performance and fed into boardroom decision making levels. The chapter explores how team based games use and mixed reality approaches can underpin this thinking and goes on to detail how different staff need motivating to perform in the right way.

The Mixed Reality Millennial

The rise of the millennial demographic in the workplace has already started shifts in how leadership needs to be delivered for a generation who are not just a little different to previous generations but very different in attitudes and expectations (Levenson, 2010). The latter half of the millennial generation – ie. Those who were born in the mid 90’s – have grown with technology in a way no previous generation did. This has not just been by speed of the new technology available but has affected how they went about their daily business. This then comes to work in a different package and expectations from this generation are very different. Organisations are already rethinking leadership training for their staff so maximum productivity and workplace satisfaction is achieved by different methods from before.

This generation will not tolerate the dismissiveness rendered to previous new tranches of workforce and on top of that have a natural default and need for technological tools to assist with their work. This is where the mixed reality approach is ideal as it incorporates media appealable to all parties and allows the different generations to share learning experiences in ways which help all learn. Using on screen and on line inputs keeps it natural and in line with millennial thinking but not relying entirely on technology means that social interactions and team based values are still achieved as part of the process.

In context to older generations who can view millennials in a negative way regarding them as less responsible, hostile to criticism and attached to their technology, millennials can be stereotyped. As with any stereotype, this is unfair and the actual reality for this generation is that they are left with many issues for the future. The important thing to consider when designing leadership development programmes is to ensure that the package includes ways to embrace generational difference so all can work alongside each other. Indeed, the different perspectives will be useful so all parties must have an inclusive approach. No longer is it the sole role of the more senior member of a project team to expect they know more. The incoming millennial leaders and Freshers from the younger tranche of this demographic slice have as much to offer in terms of solutions and pertinent practice for modern issues which require different approach.

Leadership skills development using a mixed reality and team based approach has a greater chance of creating the said level of inclusivity and discussion while encouraging the right levels of respect for all inputs regardless of age and tenure. In such an environment the newer developing leaders will gain a broader perspective which will stay with them for their whole leadership careers and indeed the older leaders will see the value in listening to their newer entrants more carefully and respecting that they may well be able to predict future custom and project outcome more accurately being closer to the needs themselves. In effect, this also by default develops the older leaders in the business and project too but does so in a way where their dignity is preserved and gives them the chance to update themselves and be a part of the future change rather than a resistance to it. Also all learn that the collaborative approach is a necessity.

This generation is also held to be the most educated in terms of the number who went through the Higher Education process. This will have encouraged their questioning minds. Higher Education too has to consider how it needs to adapt to changing need as classic methods of delivery do not appeal to this generation. They are more visual and they are more immediate.
