Abstract

This chapter covers the 4th D of the 5Ds Model for Planning and Teaching Online Courses, the deliver stage. The deliver stage consists of two major steps, building and developing the online course website and developing plans to teach and manage the course instruction online.

Overview

While the face-to-face instruction requires learners to come together in a specific time and place, online learning has eliminated such requirement. Today with the aid of computers, the Internet, and web-based technology, adult learners can learn at any time of their convenience regardless of the place of their residence. Also, the utilization of the new digital multimedia for online learning has turned what was once a learning fantasy into an instructional reality and made online courses closer than ever before to the face-to-face ones. While the Develop Stage provides of the 5Ds model provides the GPS for the online learning journey, the Deliver Stage is when the rubber meets the road. After completing the Develop Stage of the online course with the web-based instructional strategy and instructional package are both fully developed along with the course syllabus, the online instructor needs to build the course website. He/she also needs to set the stage for the road to the final destination where online course’s goal and objectives are. Having a planned web-based instructional strategy for an online course can help online instructors not only with building and developing a suitable website for the online course but also with teaching and managing it effectively online.
