The Evolution of Special Education and the Framework to Support Struggling Students

Abstract

This chapter examines the evolution of special education, beginning with Brown v. Board of Education and progressing through contemporary legislation. Through the lens of special education, this chapter will explore a comprehensive approach to learning, identifying fundamental changes, supports, and strategies developed over time to support students effectively. The chapter will focus on equitable practices that foster inclusive and effective educational environments for all learners. The key frameworks and strategies discussed will include the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), Universal Design for Learning (UDL), as well as emerging trends and future directions in special education.
