Abstract

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into journalism constitutes a transformative development in the evolution of news reporting and the broader media landscape. This chapter explores the emergence of AI in the Greek media system through qualitative analyses of journalists and CEOs, complemented by an examination of five case studies. The findings suggest that the majority of media organizations in Greece adopt a cautious “wait-and-see” approach before fully incorporating AI tools into their workflows. Nevertheless, they are taking steps in order to prepare for the integration of AI into their value chain. Journalists are experimenting with AI tools, using them primarily as Intelligent Assistants (IA) while in certain cases, AI is employed for specific tasks. These varied approaches are shaped by concerns about AI's limitations, such as linguistic challenges, ethical considerations, intellectual property issues, and potential job displacement. Moreover, the digital divide and a lack of technical skills emerge as significant barriers to the adoption of AI.
