Abstract

The Purpose of this study is to investigate the current state of utilisation of resources and services available in selected engineering colleges in Chennai District. Questionnaire followed with the personal interview is the method chosen for data collection in this study. Out of the total of nine institutions, six are selected as sample for the purpose of the present study, representing almost 66% of the total institutions in Chennai District. From each institution, 100 respondents are selected as sample; the researchers have adopted a stratification method. To test the hypothesis, Chi-square test and ANOVA two-way model are applied. This study is the first of its kind on engineering college libraries of Chennai District. It relies not only on data supplied by respondents but also on verification by actual observation. It throws light on the current status of the use of ICT facilities and level of information literacy in the users of these libraries and tries to find the reasons behind their dissatisfaction.

Review Of Literature

Murugan (2015) carried out a survey using questionnaire method and found that among the 80 respondents, 62.50 percent of students and 37.50% of faculty members were assessing E-resources. It is concluded that 14(54.00%) respondents E-journals are using faculty, 16(50.00%) are using students.

Anwar (2007) critical reviewed the unpublished fourteen research projects of students produced on information needs topics in University of Punjab during the period of 1975-1982 and suggested to the library and information science professionals to conduct the research on the critical topics connected to various areas.

Al-Shanbari, H & Meadows (1995) conducted a survey of five hundred scientists and engineers who were working in four different universities in Saudi Arabia for examining their communication and information handling practices.

Satheesha and Vaddankere (2018) through a survey analysed the library resources and services of the selected engineering college of Karnataka. This study further discussed the collection development, library membership, staff position, working hours, services offered and e-resources subscribed by the libraries.

Kumbar and Lohar (2002) analyzed the use of library facilities and information resources in Sahyadri Colleges, Shimoga (Karnataka). In this survey, 91 teachers from both the Sahyadri Arts & Commerce College and the Sahyadri Science College were participated.. The analysis of the collected data covered that the use of library resources, classification and catalogue, library services and physical facilities. Concludes that the chief intention for the use of libraries has been the academic interest of the users.

  • To study analyze the frequency of library visit and average span of time utilization in library in the engineering colleges in Chennai District.

  • To investigates an extent of academic motivation and purposes of library visit in the engineering colleges

  • To study the Sources of Bibliographic Information.

  • To identify an extent of dependence on formal and informal sources of library information.
